I am fashion, fuck swag. Im just an 18 year old art student living in chicago. Photography is my main focus. I shoot with a Mamiya AF 645, Olympus Stylus Epic, and a Nikon D50, plus I’ve borrowed other cameras. On the real, Im sure John Kim smokes more blunts than I do, (Taylor Gang, We don’t smoke blunts bitch). I prefer bongs and vaporizers because I hang out with white people.
Would you agree if I said that when comparing your work to other Chicago heads - Ace Kieffer, Nick White, Johnny De Guzman, Andrew Green, Taylor Radelia, Pete Halupka (if Pete is still in Chic) etc. - there are some thematic and stylistic similarities? What is it about Chicago/surrounding areas that bring that perspective out?
Oh yeah, there are definitely similarities between my work and their’s. For the past two and a half years I’ve been shooting photos with Nick White and Johnny De Guzman and they have really influenced the way I see things. Like many artists, I like to try out different styles and see how I can make them my own.
I think that Chicago and the surrounding areas have a different feel than any other place that I’ve visited, and to me, it’s very raw, and you can see that in most of our work.
Who is Molasses Malone?
Molasses Malone… hahaha! Over this last summer I wanted to make a mixtape because I saw everyone doing it, so i said what the hell, i’ll try it. I came up with the name when me and my homies were smoking a honey covered blunt. I said, “Whoa nigga, what if I used the name Molasses Malone, deriving from Moses Malone the 1970s basketball player, and smoked molasses covered blunts.” That ish would taste so good. I ended up only recording one song.
I believe you’re attending the Art Institute of Chicago (of Andrew G. fame) - are you doing photography there? Has going to art school in any way influenced the direction you want to go in with your art?
LOL, Andrew Green, the art police. He’s tight though. I’m a freshmen at the Art Institute of Chicago trying to do photography, but they fuckin up and don’t give me access to anything. Art school has changed my whole mind set. I never thought that I would be making sculptures, but I really like working with other art mediums.

Nick totally exists outside of facebook, same with Lil Socks his rapper persona. Nick is an interesting guy, he thinks a lot and maybe too much. We practically used to be neighbors, and since all his friends and Imoved the city he’s been kinda M.I.A.
